The Tuck Shop
Tuck shop convenience and price help students concentrate on studies. Treazer Wanjiku is always ready with a warm smile when students arrive at the "Tuck Shop", the common name for the campus convenience store. The aim of the tuck shop is to help student families get the goods that they need at a good price anytime they want. Students save money and time and can concentrate on what they are here for.
Convenience:
Store hours are convenient to student schedules, with early morning, lunchtime and evening hours. The store is centrally near student housing. When Treazer notices that students are having to leave campus to purchase certain items, she is happy to add those to the Tuck Shop list of supplies.
Competitive prices
Students have compared prices at other off-campus grocery stores and have found Tuck Shop prices to be remarkably similar. Treazer regularly goes to downtown Nairobi to a wholesale distributor, purchasing items that students have said are most needed.
All the basics are there:
- Foods: such as milk, bread, juice, rice, spaghetti, condiments, tea, coffee and soda
- Baking goods: such as several kinds of flour, baking powder, eggs, sugar and oils
- Household items: such as toilet paper, medicines, toothpaste, soap, matches and cleaning supplies
- Student supplies: such as pens and stationery
- And the children's favorite: an assortment of sweets
"Sho-sho's shop"
In addition to the dry goods at the Tuck Shop, students can find fresh fruits and vegetables, with the possibility of special orders, from Sho-sho's (Kiswahili for grandmother) kiosk.
