Taking the Creation Mandate Seriously at NEGST
Environmental Stewardship – The Creation Mandate in Genesis to take care of our world is of particular importance in our fertile and bountiful continent. Here at NEGST we are blessed to have a 50 acre campus in one of the most lovely areas of Kenya. At 6000 feet altitude, the humidity is low and the climate never too hot. Lush green grass and flowering plants and bushes are prolific. Each student family is given a small garden plot on the campus to grow favorite foods and their hard work produces delightful and colorful plots of vegetables around the school.
We cannot take for granted this gift that God has given, and as tall eucalyptus trees become mature, and sometimes a hazard, we need to replace them with young indigenous trees. Mr. Nelson Kilonzo, who is responsible for the care of the NEGST Campus, is known to all as a man who appreciates the variety and benefit of Kenya’s indigenous trees.
Nelson has worked hard to find ways to reforest our campus and we are pleased to announce that on Friday, May 13, students and faculty will gather to plant 100 trees that have been donated to the college by the PRA (Participatory Rural Appraisal) Foundation. The PRA is committed to mobilizing communities of people for environmental concerns. Mr. Thomas Mwema will speak to the NEGST community about the care of trees and their importance in Africa today.
While others study, teach and take care of accounts, libraries and classrooms, we are grateful for men like Nelson who remind us that God has also called us to take care of our world as well as our minds and hearts. We anticipate a great day.
