One of the NEGST core values is Community. This year, the Kenya government launched the Community Policing Initiative and NEGST swiftly responded by donating a PABX , six telephone heads and a type writer to Karen Police Station. The action was preceded by a high powered needs assessment tour of the station in August. The donation of the telephone system was given at a Mini-Ceremony officiated by the then acting VC, Dr. George Huttar, outside the faculty building on the NEGST campus. The phone is now fully functional. The community will be able to access the station and receive much needed help or provide relevant information in a timely manner. Without communication, there is no community.
NEGST will be assisting the police station to launch the initiative in the Karen area on 19th November 2005. The launch will be held at the Karen Police Station. One major highlight of the Launch will be giving of Awards to best performing service men and women in five different categories in order to boost their morale. NEGST believes that affirmation is at the heart of community. Other highlights will include: replacing broken furniture, roof and window repairs, planting flowers, plants and trees, painting, evangelism, Vacation Bible School and gate construction. All these will give the station the much needed face lift.
Neighbors, friends, local churches and businesses have come in and partnered with NEGST to support this effort which has been hailed by many as noble and very timely. One senior government officer commented that NEGST is the first organization to take up the challenge of community policing since it was launched at a national level by the president of the republic of Kenya, Honarable Mwai Kibaki on 27th April this year. We believe that our collective effort will assist the station become more accessible to the public and improve their public image. What a privilege for us as NEGST to participate in improving the security of this community and in deed the country as a whole!
