April 1st was no “Fools Day” for the golfers and well wishers who gathered at the Limuru Country Club. The rolling hills and lush forests surrounding the club were at their best. There was barely a cloud in the sky. Golfers began teeing off at 8:30 am and the last golfers came in around 5:30 in the afternoon. Friends and supporters gathered on the long clubhouse verandah to cheer in the golfers and enjoy the day. All celebrated that evening with a good Kenyan goat roast and awards presentation time.
Over 350,000/= Kenya shillings was raised to kick off the “Raise the Roof” project, a project set up to meet the Kenya Commission for Higher Education’s requirements that our asbestos roof be replaced.
The winner of the day was Mr. Peter Karanja. The ladies winner of the day was Sophie Njenga. The players all agreed it was a challenging course, but in excellent condition. Congratulations to all.
Our Vice Chancellor, Dr. Douglas Carew, an avid squash player, has always maintained that golf is really not a “sport.” After a couple of hours with the Limuru Golf pro, he came away conceding that golf truly is a “sport.” We’ll expect Dr. Carew to be an entry in next year’s tournament.
A special thanks to Mr. Joe Muchekehu, our Deputy VC for Administration and Finance, who worked night and day to make this event a “roof raising success.”
