NEGST provides limited on-campus housing for full-time graduate students. In the allocation of housing, priority is given to students coming from outside Kenya followed by students from out of Nairobi and then to those coming from Nairobi; thereafter, undergraduate and part-time students are considered. Students living in NEGST housing units are required to sign a tenancy agreement form.
Further information on housing can be obtained from the NEGST Housing Policy Manual.
Facilities
NEGST is blessed of God with a growing number of physical facilities for enhancing academic pursuit. These include modern classrooms and computer laboratories, recreational and Students Association centres as well as a general serene atmosphere of the wooded Karen environment.
Nursery School
The Nursery school operates as a private venture for the benefit of pre-school children of the NEGST community. It is not related directly to NEGST.
There are also several primary schools within walking distance for those students with school age children. NEGST makes information about the costs of children's schooling available to applicants on request. The responsibility for children’s schooling rests solely with each parent.
Chapel
Chapel services are held weekdays in the course of the term for all students, support and teaching staff.
Library
The NEGST library houses a growing collection of print and non-print media. The collection totals over 32,000 volumes. Over two hundred and fifty periodical subscriptions are currently received. For specifics on library policies, consult the "Library Handbook".
Community Life
NEGST is a community of people received by grace into God's family by spiritual birth, committed to maintaining the unity of the Body. Every person in the school is expected to promote the smooth operation of every aspect of school life. All activities are designed to glorify God in the building of a united community with mutual respect; brotherly love and mutual help to maturity, holiness and a wholesome testimony. Love for the brethren is pursued in all relations with one another. "Behold how they love one another" is a pursuit in the community.
Sports
Sports activities, both inter-school and intramural, are available for both men and women.
Students Association
Students elect their own official representatives annually. The Students Association provides a forum for discussion of student concerns, and a means of bringing these collectively to the School Administration, by working with the office of the Dean of Students, and by student representation on some committees.
Health Insurance
NEGST makes available health insurance for students and staff under an insurance scheme. Every member of the community is required to have a health insurance cover acceptable to the school. The coverage under this policy includes consultation fees, medication, laboratory, x-ray, and surgical procedures. Deliveries and pre-natal care or preventive medicine are not covered under the insurance scheme. Children under 6 months and individuals over 70 years of age are not covered. Any pre-existing illness of a chronic nature is not covered. This health scheme information is liable to change from year to year; so all interested persons should contact the School Clinic for the latest information.
Eligibility:
Students of NEGST, as well as their immediate family members living on campus are eligible. All students and their immediate family members are required to participate in the health scheme or else provide proof they have other recognised health insurance.
Services: Any acute medical condition will be cared for at the NEGST Clinic unless there is need for referral to a specialist. Yearly complete medical histories and physical examinations are desired. A physical examination before entry to NEGST is required of prospective students as mentioned under admissions.
Medication:
Most common medicines are available at low cost. Prescription items are often available. All medicines sold at the Clinic are at the lowest price possible.
Alumni Association
NEGST desires to promote excellence in African Christianity in general, and to perpetuate the friendship formed among students while at the school. Both those who received certification and those who did not complete a full programme are considered members of the Alumni Association.
The Alumni Affairs Coordinator, who establishes and maintains a continuing relationship between the School and the alumni and who promotes fellowship between alumni within close geographical proximity, coordinates the affairs of the alumni. Chapters have been established in Nairobi and elsewhere. An Alumni Executive represents the Alumni Association.
Women’s Fellowship
Women’s Fellowship is a support group available to all women in the community. The fellowship meets regularly and provides through its special programmes opportunities to share and develop strong Christian relationships required for spiritual, social and academic growth.
Book Centre
The NEGST Book Centre sells primarily textbooks recommended or required by teachers for various courses. The centre opens for specific periods in the term and neither stocks nor sells other school supplies.
Photocopying Services
Photocopying services are available on campus for a fee. However, each term students receive a set number of pages of photocopied materials for each course in which they are enrolled.
Orientation
Orientation is required for all new students. This weeklong exercise introduces new students to community life, policies/regulations, faculty/administration and the educational structure of the School. New students are required to be present for the entire orientation period during the week prior to commencement of September term.
Immigration Matters
Each non-Kenyan student must hold a valid passport, entry visa and approved pupil’s pass before arrival. The Administration office works with the prospective student to obtain a Kenya Pupil's Pass before arrival. This is strictly a Government requirement. Further, Dependant Passes are required for each family member of a foreign student at NEGST. This pass allows the family members (spouse and children) to stay in Kenya during the period of study of the student. The dependant pass is issued upon the acquisition of the Kenya Pupil’s Pass by the student. NEGST would assist the student in the processing of the same, but students are responsible to pay for them. Should the immigration authority reject the application, it is the responsibility of the student to appeal to the authority. However, the School would be willing to work with the student towards success in the appeal. If the student travels out of Kenya before the completion of his/her course, a re-entry permit is required.
Foreign students who may be blessed with the gift of children while in Kenya are issued with a Kenyan birth certificate after a period of three months. The certificate is obtained from the Attorney General’s office (commonly known as Sheria House). Once the birth certificate is issued, the parents would then apply for Dependant Pass in the normal way. The parents should also ensure that the baby is endorsed in one of their passports or has its own valid passport.
Please note that the Kenyan Birth Certificate does not qualify one to be a Kenyan citizen.
IMPORTANT
It is the duty of the students to ensure that they have the right immigration papers and to ensure their passports are valid and that their stay in the country is legal at all times.
Study and Residence
As housing permits, students are normally expected to be in residence on campus during school term and to be accompanied by their spouses and dependant children. Spouses of students are likewise encouraged to undertake some studies while at NEGST. Students are advised to avoid heavy outside work or extra ministry responsibilities and to devote their full attention to their study programme for its duration.
Information Technology, Telephones and Mail
NEGST provides a pool of computers for students to use in their course work. For a small fee each student is provided with an email account to facilitate internal and external communication.
International calls can be made by contacting the School receptionist. Calls made through the receptionist are charged to the student. A student, with permission from the School, can install a telephone in his/her housing unit. The cost of such installation and payment of subsequent bills are the sole responsibility of the student.
Fax services are also available on campus as well as in nearby shopping areas.
Postal Services are provided by the Kenya Postal Services. Mail is collected from the Karen Post Office regularly and distributed to the students through their pigeonholes. To post a letter, affix the appropriate stamp and deposit the letter at the reception from where it can be taken to Karen for posting.
